start again today no. 28: the dragon tyrant πŸ‰, the chinese farmer, managing oneself πŸ‘ΈπŸ½

Hey πŸ‘‹πŸ½,

From the moment we noticed it, it took the butterly 4-5 minutes to come to rest.

It flew high above as 5yo skipped but mostly threw rocks in the creek below, the water’s gentle burbling sporadically interrupted by splashes.

I lost track of it for a few seconds as it settled somewhere in the tulip tree canopy. Just as I began to look away, it changed its mind, recapturing my attention.

It flew to the other side of the creek bank, almost perching on another four point leaf, and another, and another, always quickly moving on.

A butterfly lives for around 4 weeks. 40,320 minutes. One butterfly minute is roughly equivalent to the waking hours in a human day. Why not just choose a leaf? I wondered.

I sat, for butterfly days and human minutes, watching yellow and black wings zig zap across the creek’s canopy while 5yo searched for smooth stones below the understory.

Until the clouds separated. And the butterfly landed. And basked. And I started to understand.

Here are a few things I enjoyed this week:

🧠 the fable of the dragon tyrant Nick Bostrom, 26m

Once upon a time, the planet was tyrannized by a giant dragon. The misery inflicted by the dragon-tyrant was incalculable. Some people tried to fight the dragon, but whether they were brave or foolish was difficult to say.

❀️ the story of the chinese farmer Alan Watts, 3m

Is anything good or bad? Maybe.

πŸšΆπŸ½β€β™€οΈmanaging oneself HBR, 27m

Peter Drucker encourages self knowledge by guiding us with questions like:

  • What are my strengths?

  • How do I perform?

  • How do I learn?

  • What are my values?

  • Where do I belong?

  • What should I contribute?
